Heath was certain there should be a better way, frustrated that he had not idea what he could be doing to make this any better. The general was lost, taken when Heath should have been—and he should have found a way to bring him back without putting Nelda in danger.

Before they could save him, the king had been pulled through what Heath thought would keep them safe from another entity they could not fully understand. The queen. He sighed at the thought of it. The horse turned and looked at him as though it could offer assistance. He ran his hand down the animal’s neck and patted it gently.

He could only hope that the general would understand Heath’s taking his horse. The beast seemed to have a better understanding of the general than anyone, and she might be able to assist in finding her master and the king. Lia’s hand appeared beside Heath’s, rubbing gently at the neck of the horse.

“Do I have to ride one alone?” she asked. “I’m not confident. But we could move faster if I did.”

Heath nodded. But as she slipped her hand around his arm, he was thankful for her closeness.

“You have done nothing wrong,” she whispered, leaning into him. “Without you, more would have been lost.”

He wanted to believe her, but he could not find the words. The horse stomped its foot as though in agreement. He smiled and turned to the woman before him. Those pale blue eyes seemed to tug at something inside of him, calling to him.

“We can ride together,” he said, lifting her up and into the saddle. She sat somewhat awkwardly, then pulled her dress up as she threw her leg over the horse.

There were not enough of them, he decided, looking around the too-small group. Only five or so soldiers, whom he had seen at Frayne’s door and West assured them were trustworthy. One of them was helping Nelda onto a horse, and Heath wondered if she could ride alone or if one of them should travel with her. Although he was not sure what the king would think of a soldier with his arms around the prince’s mother. There was far more between them than anyone had guessed, even if they claimed it had all been so long ago.

Frayne climbed onto the horse Heath had taken out himself when they had searched for the queen the first time. Heath climbed up behind Lia, slipping his arms around her and taking the reins. They had agreed to travel as straight as possible towards where he thought the king was. They had no idea if the queen was still with him or what state he might be in.

The plan was to reassess the path when they rested each night. Under the cover of darkness and with the protection of the soldiers, they would try again to see if they could discover where he was. Heath was sure they would need Pip to make it work; but then, she was sure that with Frayne they could find what they needed.
